In order to set default status in the default work item process flow (such as bug) you need to go to admin->configuration->process flow
If you wish to set default process flow for specific project – go to admin->select specific project and select process flow tab
Then you click “Add” and select “default status” in from, and the actual status you wish to set as default in “To” and click “Add and Exit”
this will replace existing default to new default
